A neorealist observation of Cuba’s underground electronic scene. In Cuba, when night falls, the city shifts its rhythm. Like the cocuyos, the small luminous insects that appear in the tropical darkness, certain energies of urban life emerge only after sunset. They are discreet presences, often invisible in the official narratives of the island, yet capable of generating a quiet and persistent vitality.
Cuba Coocuyo Remix was born from the desire to observe this reality up close, without narrative constructions or spectacular mediation. The film moves within a community connected to electronic music and follows the flow of its daily life: encounters, waiting, movement through the city, suspended conversations, and moments of unexpected irony.
The approach is openly neorealist. The camera stays close to bodies, places, and the real duration of situations, allowing events to unfold naturally. There is no attempt to guide or explain what happens; instead, the film inhabits the passage of time, where even the smallest gestures can reveal an entire human universe. In this way, the Cuban electronic scene is not treated as a musical phenomenon to be narrated, but as a living environment. A human context shaped by relationships, presences, contradictions, and moments of suspension, where everyday life becomes the true narrative material. Through this patient observation, the film builds a collective portrait that emerges through the accumulation of fragments and situations. Night becomes the space where these presences meet and continue to exist, illuminating only what is necessary, much like the cocuyos in the dark. Cuba Coocuyo Remix does not simply tell the story of Cuban electronic music. It tells the story of the people who make it possible.
